How do I register for the B1 exam?

Once you have created a free account, you can book your preferred telc exam in Berlin.

You can register up to 16 calendar days in advance, provided there are still places available. Places are very limited, as the exam is taken in small groups. To take an accessible exam, please register no later than 6 weeks before the exam date.

How is the telc B1 exam structured?

The telc exam consists of two parts: a written part and an oral part. You will be required to complete tasks covering all language skills: writing, reading, listening, speaking and language elements.

Written part

- Reading and language elements: 90 minutes

- Listening: 30 minutes

- Writing: 30 minutes

Oral part

- Preparation time: 20 minutes

- Speaking: 15 minutes

The receptive section consists of reading, listening and language elements. Task types include, for example, multiple-choice or matching exercises.

In the productive section – writing and speaking – participants analyse a piece of input and are required to express their views on it in writing or orally. In the oral examination, the focus is on direct interaction between the candidates.

What is the procedure on the day of the exam?

No later than 3 days before your exam, you will receive an email containing all the information you need about your exam day. It is important that you arrive on time. If you arrive late, we will not be able to admit you to the exam.

Please report to the office first, where your official photo ID will be checked. You will also be told in which room your exam will take place.

You will then need to hand in your personal belongings at the cloakroom – for example, bags, jackets, mobile phones, smartwatches, etc.

After the written exam, we will let you know when your oral exam is due to take place. You will either have time to take a break and leave the premises, or you will proceed directly to the waiting room.

From there, you will proceed to the preparation room, where you will prepare for the oral exam.

We will then escort you to the examination room.

Once that is over, you will have completed the exam and can return to the cloakroom to collect your personal belongings.

Further information – before the exam

In that case, a refund of the examination fee will no longer be possible.

In a combined examination, you sit both the written and oral parts on the same day. It is important that you keep the whole day free, as there may be a long break between the written and oral examinations.

At the DeutschAkademie in Vienna, Hamburg and Munich, you can also sit partial exams – either just the oral part or just the written part. This allows you to easily complete whatever you still need to pass the full exam.

Requirements for a partial examination:
An examination of the same format must have been taken within the last 12 months and a results sheet must be provided.

If you require special examination arrangements due to a disability, please do not hesitate to contact us. The certificate must not be more than 2 years old and must be submitted in German or English. Alternatively, a certified translation into one of these two languages must be sent to us in addition to the original certificate.
