Anyone who wants to take a German course for private or professional reasons can apply for a visa on this basis, also known as a language visa. The language courses must comprise at least 18 hours per week and are limited in time.

Which visa do I need for a language course in Germany?

Depending on the duration of your language course in Germany, you will need different visas:

  • Schengen visa type C for short-term stays: If your language course does not last longer than 90 days, you can attend a language course with a Schengen visa.
  • Language visa Germany in the form of a national visa for long-term stays: If you want to stay longer than 90 days, you can apply for a special language visa for Germany, among other things to attend language courses.
  • Pre-study language visa: This type of visa is required if you are taking a language course in preparation for studying at a university in Germany.

What requirements must a language course fulfill for a language visa for Germany?

An intensive language course lasting more than 90 days is a suitable prerequisite for a language visa for Germany. The requirements for your language visa Germany to be approved:

  • The course duration is limited to 3 to 12 months.
  • The German course has at least 18 lessons per week.

How do I get the course confirmation from the DeutschAkademie for submission to the German Embassy?

As soon as the course fees for your German course have been credited to our account, you can download the registration confirmation with all course details from the webshop. You then submit this together with all other application documents for the German visa to the German embassy abroad (see German Embassy checklist).

Tip

You must provide a "real" residential address to the visa authority; the address of the DeutschAkademie is not considered a residential address.

Where do I apply for a language visa for Germany?

The application for a visa for Germany must be completed, signed and submitted in person to the German embassy or consulate in your place of residence, together with all the necessary supporting documents. We recommend that you contact the German diplomatic mission in your home country as early as possible. This is because processing can take up to four months.

What happens if I don't get a visa?

If you do not receive a visa for Germany for the German course you have booked, we will refund the course fees in full up to 14 days before the start of your German course. If you send us a copy of the rejection letter, you can also cancel the course free of charge up to 7 days before the start of your German course.

Can I extend my language course visa?

Your language course visa for Germany is initially issued for three months. In some cases, it can be extended for up to a further 9 months at your local immigration office.

Checklist: What do I need to apply for a language visa?

You can find a checklist of all the documents you need to submit to the German embassy abroad to apply for a visa for Germany in the relevant information sheets on the "Visa to take up a language course" at the German embassy in your country. We have also compiled a list for you here - but these things can change, so there is no guarantee. In any case, please enquire about the current situation in your country.

Checklist

  • Two application forms - fully completed and signed in German
  • A valid passport (this means: with a validity period of at least 3 months after the planned return date, not older than 10 years, contains at least two blank visa pages)
  • Two recent biometric passport photos
  • Proof of intensive language course (at least 18 hours of lessons per week)
  • Confirmation of payment of the course fee
  • Health insurance for the duration of the language course
  • Proof of secure means of subsistence: blocked account, submission of a declaration of commitment by a third party on an official form or notarized declaration by the parents, with proof of the parents' income in the last six months
  • Proof of main residence in Germany: certificate of registration of the apartment (confirmation of registration), rental agreement and confirmation of moving in from the landlord, letter of motivation for attending the language course
