What is the structure of the ÖSD C1 exam?
The ÖSD C1 exam consists of two parts: a written and an oral part. All important language skills are tested: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. At DeutschAkademie, the modules can only be taken together.
Reading: 4 sections. Duration: 90 minutes
You will read demanding authentic texts from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, such as articles, commentaries, or academically oriented texts.
The exam tests global comprehension, detailed comprehension, and selective reading.
Typical task types include multiple choice, matching exercises, or gap-fill texts.
Listening: 2 sections. Duration: approx. 40 minutes
You will listen to longer conversations, discussions, interviews, or radio programs covering social and academic topics.
You must identify main statements, details, and opinions.
The tasks usually consist of multiple choice or matching exercises.
Writing: 2 tasks. Duration: 90 minutes
You will write:
- a formal email,
- a written presentation, statement, or commentary.
You must structure information, present arguments, and clearly formulate complex content.
Speaking: 3 sections. Duration: 15–20 minutes
approx. 20 minutes preparation time
The oral exam includes:
- a telephone conversation,
- a discussion,
- a short presentation.
This section tests how confidently, spontaneously, and structurally you can communicate at the C1 level.
The exam may take place as an individual or paired exam.

Frequently asked questions about the ÖSD C1 exam in Vienna
DeutschAkademie has no influence over the processes during the exam, as it strictly follows the official guidelines. The exams are directly supervised by ÖSD, and the results are provided to DeutschAkademie. Therefore, DeutschAkademie also has no influence on when the results are received or if delays occur. However, we will always keep you informed about the current status.

Can I retake the exam if I do not pass?
Yes, exams can be repeated as many times as desired.
Until when can I register for an exam?
You can register up to 14 calendar days before the exam, provided there are still available spots. Places are very limited, as the exam is conducted in small groups.
Can I reschedule or cancel my exam?
You can cancel or reschedule your exam free of charge up to 4 weeks before the exam date. After this deadline, this is no longer possible. If you register within the last 30 days before the exam, free cancellation is not possible. After that, the full exam fee will be charged.
What time does my exam take place?
You will receive an email no later than 3 days before your exam date with information about the exact time of your exam and the exam procedure. If you have not received an email by 2 days before the exam, please contact us.
What do I need to bring on the exam day?
To be admitted to the exam, you must present your official photo ID. If you forget it, we unfortunately cannot admit you to the exam.
Drinks and food are allowed.
Personal hygiene items such as tissues are also permitted.
Jackets, bags, mobile phones, wristwatches, and other items may not be taken into the room and must be handed in before the exam begins. According to the examination regulations, mobile phones and other electronic devices must be handed in and switched off for the entire duration of the exam.

What is the procedure on the exam day?
Three days before your exam, you will receive an email containing all information about your exam day. It is important that you arrive on time. In the case of late arrival, we will no longer be able to admit you to the exam.
Please first check in at the office, where your official photo ID will be verified. You will also receive information about the room in which your exam will take place.
At the cloakroom, you must hand in your personal belongings.
After the written exam, we will inform you when your oral exam will take place. Either you will still have time to take a break and leave the premises, or you will go directly to the waiting room.
From there, you will proceed to the preparation room, where you can prepare for the oral exam.
Afterwards, we will take you to the examination room.
Once everything is completed, you may return to the cloakroom and collect your personal belongings.
