What is telc?

The name of the educational company telc GmbH is the abbreviation for The European Language Certificates. The company offers language examinations, teaching materials and training courses worldwide.

How recognised is telc and what can I do with a telc certificate?

By passing a telc exam, you can prove your language skills - for school, training, university, work or naturalisation in Germany. Telc certificates are internationally recognised by companies, authorities, schools and universities. They prove that you are learning or have already learnt German.

What does a telc exam cost?

Telc examinations are subject to a fee. Prices vary depending on the language level, provider and partial or complete exam. In most cases, the fee is between 150 and 200 euros. You can find out the specific costs from the exam provider - further information can be found in the following section.

Where can I take a telc exam?

You can take all telc language examinations at selected examination centres. There are over 3,000 examination centres worldwide - at telc GmbH as well as at authorised language schools, adult education centres and universities. There are a few exams that are available digitally as well as hybrid and paper-based. This is indicated on the individual telc exams.

What telc exams are there?

Whether it's for school, training, studies, work or visas and naturalisation: telc certificates are available for all competence levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). There is a large selection. You can also choose between different professions and sectors, for example special examinations for professions in the healthcare sector. How can I register for a telc exam?

Once you have completed a German course at the appropriate level, you can register for the telc exam. In the intensive courses and exam preparation courses at the DeutschAkademie, you will learn everything you need for the respective telc exams.

To do this, select the desired telc test centre as described, which will then inform you of the next exam dates. It is usually possible to register at short notice.

An exception is the telc C1 exam for university entrance in Germany. There are fixed dates for this exam. You can find a current overview here on the telc website: telc C1 exam dates

How are the telc exams organised? And what is tested?

The examinations consist of a written and an oral part. The written part - reading, listening and writing - lasts approx. 200 minutes. The oral part includes 20 minutes of preparation time. The actual oral examination lasts approx. 15 minutes.

How can I best prepare for the telc exam?

To familiarise yourself with the structure and procedure of the desired telc exam, it is advisable to work through the respective practice tests that telc has published especially for preparation. They will tell you how the exam is organised, how the written and oral performance is assessed and other important details and tips about the exam, including a complete set of tests with solutions.
