What is telc?

The name of the educational organisation telc GmbH is an abbreviation for The European Language Certificates – in German: Europäische Sprachenzertifikate. The organisation offers language exams, teaching materials and training courses worldwide.
- telc certificates are available for all proficiency levels – A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 – of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
- There is a wide range to choose from. You can also filter by specific occupations and sectors, such as care.
- There is a fee for the telc exams, which can be taken at selected examination centres.

How widely recognised is telc, and what can I do with a telc certificate?
By passing a telc Deutsch exam, you can demonstrate your language skills – for school, vocational training, university studies, work or naturalisation in Germany. telc certificates are recognised internationally by companies, public authorities, schools and universities. They prove that you are learning German or have already learnt it.
You will need the various levels of telc certificates for the following, amongst other things:
- A1: required for family reunification or visa applications
- A2: often required for a residence permit
- B1: serves as proof of language proficiency for naturalisation or a permanent residence permit
- B2: important evidence for employers and apprenticeship providers; speeds up the naturalisation process
- C1: a major advantage in the world of work
- C1 Hochschule: a prerequisite for studying at a German university on certain degree programmes; fast-track naturalisation

Where can you take a telc Deutsch exam?
There are over 3,000 examination centres worldwide. The DeutschAkademie is a licensed examination centre and administers telc Deutsch examinations at its centres in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Vienna.
What telc Deutsch exams are available?
Whether it’s for school, vocational training, university studies, work, or visas and naturalisation: telc certificates are available for all proficiency levels – A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 – of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). There is a wide range to choose from. You can also choose from various professions and sectors, such as specialised exams for careers in the healthcare sector. Certificates for children are also available.
DeutschAkademie offers the majority of these telc Deutsch exams, but not all of them.
How can I register for a telc Deutsch exam?
Once you have registered free of charge, you can choose the right exam at the appropriate level at your preferred location and then book the exam.
How are the telc exams structured? And what do they cover?
The exams consist of a written and an oral part. The written part covers reading, listening and writing. The length of the written exam varies depending on the level. The oral part includes 20 minutes’ preparation time – except for A1, where there is no preparation time. The actual oral exam lasts approximately 15 minutes.
Are there accessible telc exams?
The DeutschAkademie also offers special, accessible telc exams. We recommend registering 6–8 weeks before your preferred exam date. The accessible exam must be approved in advance by telc gGmbH, and this process can take several weeks. Please contact us and we will be happy to advise you.
How can I best prepare for the telc exam?
To familiarise yourself with the structure and format of your chosen telc exam, we recommend working through the relevant practice tests that telc has published specifically for preparation purposes. These will explain how the exam is conducted, how the written and oral components are assessed, and provide further important details and tips on the exam, including answers to the tests.
You can find practice tests on the telc website, including those for levels A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1. In addition, we offer specialised exam preparation courses designed to prepare you specifically for the telc exams.
