14. Kuriositäten

Although it’s still around 0ºC outside, all shops are fully ready for the Spring-Summer season. So if you are, like them, ready for some light clothes and shoes shopping, let’s get started with some trends freshly picked from Munich streets !

photo 2 photo 3

Not that I would buy these, but I think you should know that these wild animal prints are out there !!

Also, what about the good all Converse All Star ? I actually love their ballerina flat version, but I don’t feel so confident about the heely version … I guess there are as many tastes as people or Earth !

For you, gentlemen, I found some interesting things too ! I thought I was educated enough on the art of making the knot of a tie, but I found this book with at least 20 explanations of tie-knotting!

photo 2

It’s almost like a cookbook, with explicative drawings and all. Many of the “recipes” looked alike to me, but I found this I’ve never seen before – der Diagonale !

So get to your Krawatten !

13. Neue Pinakothek

Hallo !

Today I woke up willing to take a walk, but the sun was to shy for a Spaniard like me, and the wind was FREEZING ! So I decided to go to a museum. Not so windy … and a lot of cool stuff to see too !

There is definetely a lot to choose from in Munich, but after some research, I found that the New Pinakothek permanent collection is only 1€ on Sundays. I had no excuse !

I would like to show you everything, because I spent a couple of very interesting hours, but you’d have to go yourselves !

In one of the first rooms I was impressed by some HUGE paintings.

This one is The destruction of Jerusalem by Titus, by Wilhelm von Kaulbach. From 1846.

This photo is not great, but I just want to show you how big and detailed the paintings were.

I discovered plenty of German artists I was not familiar with. One room combined a painter and a sculptor :

The perspectives in the room were pretty interesting.

And last but not least : Van Gogh’s Sunflowers !! I didn’t expected to see such a well-known painting today, so I was quite amazed for a while. I guess one gets used to see Van Gogh’s paintings everywhere, but I think he was a genius !

There were also some Goya, Cézanne, Monet, Manet, Gauguin, Signac, a Turner, a Klimt, a Munch … The permanent collection is quite eclectic so I bet there is something you would like !

Have a nice week !

12. Sehenswürdigkeiten in München

I’ve passed many times around Marienplatz, buts thanks to the visit of my friend Julie the other week, I was looking for new corners of sightseeing. And to my surprise St Peter Church was right there all the time ! You do have to climb a bunch of stairs, but the view is totally worth it !

It was not the clearest day, but apparently, when it’s sunny, you can see the mountains !

We did see Marienplatz and the Viktualenmarkt from another perspective.

We also went to Nymphenburg Schloss. The rain gave us a break and we could have a walk around, watching young swans swimming and older ones flying around (they are huge when flying, by the way).

You could also tell that Spring is coming soon … If you know what I mean !

10. Wintersport in München Vol. 2 : surfen

Many of you may know, but until I saw it with my own eyes, I couldn’t believe that this kind of picture could be taken in Munich.

photo 1

And yet, the Eisbach, provides in the heart of Munich with a continuous wave to those who dare. Not only because surfing it’s already a tricky activity, but because indeed, the water is ice cold (especially in Winter, of course, but in Summer is not particularly warm either …) and the current can crush you !

photo 2

This picture is taken from Prinzregentenstraße, between Bruderstraße and Wagmüllerstraße.

Recently I discovered another spot with many surfers. I guess there is not enough room for all of them. If you follow the Eisbach up on the Englischer Garten, you can find it.

photo 4

It clearly says you shouldn’t be surfing, or kayaking, for that matter, but I think it’s pretty cool that the law enforcement is loose in this case.

Anytime I pass by I spend some time just staring, and I must say it’s hypnotizing ! These are very relaxing places for me in Munich, and I recommend them to you. Especially when the weather will get a little bit warmer !

Enjoy the week !

9. Wintersport in München Vol. I: ski fahren

One of the best things of Munich during the Winter is that is really close to the Alps. This means endless places to go skiing, snowboarding, hiking, eating Kaisersmann and drinking Glühwein in a nice Hütte, etc, etc.

This is a view from Pfuitjoch, a summit near Lähn, in Austria.
We went up ski-hiking or skitouren with some friends.

Ski hiking is tiring in the way up, but also very rewarding.

You get to see wonderful landscapes and enjoy slopes full of powder snow. If you are lucky, you get a virgin slope and then, it’s like skiing on a cloud. They challenging way up it’s then totally worth it !

I’m only a beginner in ski hiking, but I’m lucky to be surrounded by experienced skiers. You are responsible for your own safety, and the risk of avalanche is often present. But if you up to the challenge and well acompanied, I’m sure you are going to enjoy !

Enjoy the snow now, Frühling is coming !

8. Things fitting perfectly into things

Hallo zusammen !

Maybe you don’t understand my post title just yet, but let me explain.

Heute I want to share with you a blog I found a while ago.  I saw some of its posts and thought it was funny, but it didn’t keep me awake that night either.

https://thingsfittingperfectlyintothings.tumblr.com/

Until one evening, while I was actually in a DeutschAkademie class. That evening, everything changed ! Sofia, a really nice classmate, gave me a Kinder Bueno bar. I lOOOOOve those, and I couldn’t resist. I used to eat a lot of them during class breaks back in university. I started to look at the plastic wrap with some nostalgia, realizing this packaging was different than the one I knew in France, and then,

PLÖTZLICH,

fitintothings

it hit me ! I saw it ! I could do it ! I could find things that fit perfectly into other things !

fitintothings1

And then, for the rest of the evening, I was smiling with my Kinder Stabilo marker. How refreshing is that ?

I hope you don’t think I’m crazy … I just think that simple things can also be fun. And Sofia also laughed for a while. ^^

Enjoy the Wochenende!

7. Ostern ! Noch nicht …

I don’t know if other countries get so crazy about Easter, Pâques or Pascua, or if it is just Munich … but this city has been taken over by GIANT Lindt rabbits (or giant piles of smaller rabbits),

photo 1

egg-shaped chocolates,

photo 3

cookie nests full of candy eggs,

photo 4

chocolate hens and lambs … literally anything Frühlingly you can imagine has its chocolate replica in your supermarket these days.

Is your city or town also awaiting Easter with open arms ? I have nothing against it, except that I think it’s REALLY early. We are supposed to be doing some Fasten or fasting for another 2 weeks and it’s getting really hard to resist with all these treats …

It’s getting cold again and that Ferrero Rocher Hase (rabbit) it’s really looking at me : “Come on, you know you cannot resist my creamy chocolate covered with hazelnuts !

Do you have any tricks to resist the evil rabbits ?

6. Es gibt kein schlechtes Wetter …

… nur falsche Kleidung !

Aber in München brauchst du mehr Kleidung als in Spanien !!

So in Germany I heard there is no such thing as bad weather, only wrong or unadapted clothes ! But if you ask me, if you are coming to Muninch these days, be sure to pack some extra pullovers, scarfs, gloves and boots ! (Not that in San Francisco you would only need flowers in your hair not to get a cold, but at least they don’t get so much snow as we do here … )

Hopefully, I just learned many expressions to talk about the weather. Very handy for me these days, especially wenn das Wetter verrückt spielt ! And it is true that the weather is kind of crazy these days. Today it was sunny, then cloudy, then snowing and cloudy, then sunny and snowing …

Hier ist es sonnig, aber früher hat es geschneit.

Nachmittag, mehr Wolken … schade!

Am See ist es nebelig.

Und die Sonne ist da !

5. Redensarten mit Essen

Hallo !

I already said that I like lots of dishes in German and Bavarian food, but the beauty of going to Intensivkurse increases when you learn some expressions with FOOD ! Suddenly, you are not on A1 level anymore, you master German idioms !

Our teacher showed it to us in an exercise, so I’ll show you a little game, ok ?  SPIELZEIT!

You have to connect numbers and letters to find the meaning of the idioms, ok ? Here it goes :

1.

A – Bist du noch sauer auf mich ?

B – Nein, das ist doch schon                               a) entscheidend sein

kalter Kaffee !

2.

Schaust du heute fern ? Borussia spielt                 b) unfreundlich sein

gegen Bayern München. Da geht’s um die Wurst !

3.

A – Na Chef, wie hat Ihnen mein artikel gefallen ?

B – Ehrlich gesagt, ist das alles Käse,                  c) vergessen /

was Sie geschrieben haben !                                   nicht mehr aktuell

4.

A – Was ist mit deinem Nachbarn los ?                   d) Unsinn

Er schaut böse und sagt nicht “Guten Tag”.

B – Mit ihm ist einfach nicht gut Kirschen essen.

I like myself more to taste some Kaisersmarrn …

But there are many other expressions withh food. Such as :

Das ist mir Wurst ! Meaning, “it’s the same, I don’t care”

Ok, enough waiting : I’ll give you the solutions !

1 – C : kalter Kaffee = vergessen, nicht mehr aktuell

2 – A : entscheidend sein. Important, decisive, wichtig

3 – D : das alles Käse = Unsinn, nonsense

4 – B : nicht gut Kirschen essen = unfreundlich sein

What other expressions food do you find funny ? Bis später, Caye

4. Anpassung an Bayern.

Herbst-The Fall came slowly, but Januar brought some serious Schnee!

With all the snow falling over Munich and Bayern, one has to give up the bike

or the scooter, as my neighbor has wisely decided …

I wish I could go sledding to Stachus, or that I could get a pair of nordic skis to go to my Abendkurs, but although Munich has a lot of green areas and fields, skis are not very practical in pedestrian crossings, I’m afraid…

These last weekends I’ve been enjoying some nice sledding and (der, die, das) THE Schlitten has become a new but important objet in my life in Bayern !

Living by the sea in Northern Spain a Schlitten is not an ordinary life objet ! It’s great here in Munich you can go to a park and find some easy and relaxing fun ! And you can take it to the next level and go hike for a while in the mountains … you’ll be looking forward to go downhill!

The area near the lake of Tegernsee has really nice trails to climb up with your sled, have a Knodelsuppe or a Heisseschokolade in a cosy Hütte and sled downhill. A treat ! It really helps to keep up with the cold winter …

How are you all dealing with the cold weather around ? Do you get so much snow in you city ?

Bis später, Cayetana
