Hamburg’s Neighbourhoods

Hallo followers,

If you have already discovered the bustling city centre and you would like to escape a bit from the “big city life” then the best thing to do is to explore one of Hamburg’s neighbourhoods. Starting from the Fischmarkt and walking along the river Elbe you can find amazing spots where locals are hanging out and enjoying their free time (especially during summer).

If you are lucky enough to have a sunny day then I advise you to visit the Strandperle or the Elbstrand, which is Hamburg’s favourite sandy beach.  Here you can relax under the sunshades and enjoy a cup of coffee/tea while listening to the seagulls and observing the container-dockyards and ships arriving and departing from the port. A fun fact for you: Strandperle used to be a milk stand where people enjoyed their glass of milk after taking a bath in the river Elbe before the World War II and reopened in 1949 as a restaurant.

While walking further along the river Elbe, though some nice parks and forest you will reach the so-called ‘Treppenviertel‘ („stairs quarter”) in Blankenese, where the picture above was taken. As it is Hamburg’s most hilly area (with a peak of the 72-metre-hight Süllberg), the quarter has approximately 5.000 steps with narrow alleys and small mansions. It used to be a fishing village back in the days as the famous 200-year old Fishing House (das Fischerhaus) shows, however nowadays it is Hamburg’s most prominent and wealthy sea-side suburb. Take the beach stairs (“Strandtreppe”) and stroll down to the Elbe, where you can see the old captain’s cottages blending with the new villas and enjoy the sandy beaches and small restaurants and cafés.

Bis später!
