Words, words, words…

Tal_S
Berlin, am

When I first arrived in Berlin I was told that this city does not require knowing the native language. “It’s an international city… everybody knows English… you don’t need German here at all…” They were so wrong. From coffee shops to Deutsche Post – everyone needs to speak the language to get along. So I started my life in Berlin determined to collect as many words as I can. I started even before the course – the U-Bahn, restaurants, signs in the street, even Rossman and REAL. Everywhere I could fetch words, verbs and complete sentences, I immediately wrote them down in my little notebook and repeated them. There are a few Facebook apps, mobile apps and of course – the internet is full of websites and dictionaries. The greatest website for verbs, which I strongly recommend is http://conjd.cactus2000.de/

Day3

Now… A few words about die Fußballweltmeisterchaft (World Cup)… Traditionally, I have my heart for Germany and Holland. Holland already proved itself with the 5-1 on Spain last Friday, and today Germany should take over Portugal. There is no other option. A few million people are going to watch this match at 6pm. Germany can’t lose. Not tonight. I’m going to watch the match with friends in a bar, and let you know tomorrow how it was… Keep your fingers crossed for Germany!!

First day of school – remember to breath ;)

Tal_S
Berlin, am

First day of school… I’m sure you’re all familiar with the fears that come with this day… For the past week I prepared myself and tried to study the basics, but my biggest fear was to speak in front of everyone. What if someone laughs at me if I pronounce a word wrong? What if the teacher is not patient enough and all the others would be better students than I am? What if the people in the group are not serious and don’t want to study the language like I do? I was so anxious. And then, the first day started. The teacher, Carolin (the Blond with the Green shirt), is more than I could ever hope for. She is young and nice and smile all the time, and has this steel patience – unbelievable!! We have people from Brazil, Spain, South Korea, France, Australia, Venezuela, Colombia and Italy (and, of course, Israel). All of us are more or less at the same level of not knowing Deutsch, so no one is laughing, or rushing anywhere. The atmosphere is so good, people are young and having fun just being there, and three hours just passed liked nothing!! No home work for the first day!! Yay!!

Berlin, after ten years- I’m here to stay!

Tal_S
Berlin, am 11. juni 2014

Hallo! I’m Tal and I’m addicted to Germany for 10 years now 🙂 Mostly to Berlin, but I’ve been traveling around the country for the past ten years, feeling the atmosphere, the people, the mentality, and mainly – the freedom! You can feel and even smell the freedom everywhere you go. It’s priceless… Who am I you might ask… I’m Tal, and I just moved to Berlin (finally), after I wanted to do so for such a long time, but didn’t dare, and always told myself why I can’t… Originally I’m from Tel Aviv, Israel, but my soul and heart were always in Germany. I have a BA in International Relations and MA in Security Studies and Terrorism. I came to Berlin in order to pursue a PhD in Political Science in one of Berlin’s Universities. For that, I need at least the C1 level and that’s why I’m at Deutschakademie. Now, you probably ask why I need Deutsch with a PhD program when I can just write my dissertation in English… I know. But the way I see it- you can’t live in a country without knowing its language, and if I learn it already, why not to do the whole package? Accomplishing challenges is the best way to live, right?

From now on I’m gonna tell you about my life in Berlin, my Deutsch course, and everything that can make you smile with the sunshine (or rain in the middle of June!!) and might be useful to us new Berliners! Tschüss!!
