Learning through playing

German lesson B2.2

Hello blog readers,

We were having an mission impossible this morning again: how to divide 5 people into pairs? This was needed for a game similar to Tabu, where one of the players must describe a word and the other must guess. Since our topic is still health and all related to it (causes-and-effects, medicine etc), the words to be guessed were either illnesses or medications. I can’t objectively assess, how educative and effective this game is, but for warming us up, it’s fine. : -)

Suddenly, some more students arrived, so we got to move on into next role play, which was „A visit to doctor”. Our homework was to get familiar with the useful expressions and possible phrases in our workbook, that one might need while visiting a doctor. In a lesson,  we got 15 minutes to prepare a dialogue with partner. Spectator’s task, when listening and watching the others, was to pay attention to some frequent mistakes, inappropriate words or sentence structures that may occur. Not the most praiseworthy task I’ve done (hehehe), since it’s strange to criticize others, if I haven’t spoken myself yet. But in the end, all the stories were entertaining!

And if this post started to sound too playful, let me refer to grammar. : -) As always.
We were working on modale Zusammenhänge (excuse me, my English is too poor to translate it) and to be honest, it drove me, personally, a bit nuts. While doing my homework, I had to cheat a lot. Fortunately, we are not finished with it yet, so I hope to gain some clarity and certainty about this topic in coming lesson.

Have a nice week!

Immer wieder Berlin entdecken

Hallo, gute Blog-Leser/in!

Is life really too short to learn German?

… is the question, I asked from myself after a class today in earnest. And almost started to believe in affirmative form of it, haha.

Since there were so many unanswered questions left about passive form yesterday, we were solving more and more exercises about it today. Analyzing the sentence-building step by step made it quite clear at the end, but I’m pretty sure, that if someone would wake me up in the middle of night and ask: „How do you compose a sentence in present progressive passive in German, huh?”, I would definitely mumble something like: „Io3+sbc(kjajkögsök#”. We were practicing in pairs and using „the stations method”. Figuratively speaking, there are about four stations set up in a classroom and in each one of them is a list of exercises about the topic we just learned all together. Every pair of students has about 2-3 minutes to work in each stop and to solve as many exercises as possible. In 3 minutes, all pairs have to move in clockwise to the next station.  Tasks change in every stop, so moving from one station to another makes you to think fast and use the right knowledge in right place. Pretty challenging, since when you start feeling that you just got the point of task, it’s time to move on! :*)

Last week, one of my classmates made a proposal to go to cafe after a lesson sometimes and just practice German by casual chatting. Nice motion; because, to be honest, – even after 2,5 weeks we still don’t know each other well yet. I am so sorry, that my timetable this week looks like a nightmare, because I really would like to join them – just to talk and get to know each other. Our German is more-or-less in the same level, so it would be comfortable to chat. I booked my next German course in DeutschAkademie today and I was queuing in the office after our lesson about an hour, so that my co-students finished their chat and coffees already by this time.

So, I felt sorry for myself and decided to eat my lunch in Aki Tatsu Sushi & more instead. They have 50% happy hour every day until 17 o’clock (I might be wrong about the exact time, but approximately until 17) and the meal you can see on the picture here, costed 6.50€  total. I am full and happy! So, if you happen to be in Charlottenburg and would like to have good sushi for affordable price, then Kantstr. 143 is the address to go!

Have a nice Wednesday!

Liebe Teilnehmer,

Offtopics here and there

Hello,

Time is flying by so fast, that we have crossed the „mid-line” of our German course. Less that half to go!

On Monday of our third week, there were only 5 students present in our class, so we were struggling a bit with dividing people into groups when doing teamwork. We were working hard (read: translating, explaining, discussing) on vocabulary, that has something to do with the topic: university. I should definitely learn those expressions and translations properly, since I want to apply for University here in coming spring. Another headache on Monday was a grammar part: nouns and verbs conjunction. For example, a correct way to say „ask a question” in German, is not „eine Frage fragen”, but „eine Frage stellen”. Or  „to get an impression” is „einen Eindruck gewinnen”, not „einen Eindruck bekommen” etc. Very useful conjunctions, actually, if I could only remember them all by heart. Such word games make the language richer.

On Tuesday, we managed to swerve off of the planned topics so many times, that we more-or-less ran out of study-time eventually. We started with a game, where each one of us had to come up with an idea of service, that she/he would like to have to help to study German. We ended up sharing opinions about nude beaches. Don’t ask how did it happen. Another try: we learned about alternatives for passive. For example: one can use „ein realisierbares Projekt” instead of saying „ein Projekt, das realisiert werden kann” etc. We ended up not understanding the difference between past continuous and past perfekt in German. Interesting, huh? I guess even our teacher wasn’t ready for so complicated questions in B2 level class. But I really hope she rather enjoys the students, who are eager to learn :*)

And to get out of the topic here in this blog as well, I will add a picture of Drindl-dress – a Bavarian costume, that is a must-have look during Oktoberfest. A friend of mine is going to celebrate it in Hamburg and asked me to sew her dress a little bit. It’s a dress with nice fassong (style), but in my opinion, has lost it’s original meaning and become too revealing. And it’s still September by the way, why did Oktoberfest already start? :*D

Mina Eesti lipuga tere

Tuuli

Homework pays off

Good evening,

Here I am again – working on my homework late Sunday evening. Or rather like finishing the very last exercise. Our task is to write a motivation letter to university and apply for a semester and/or for the whole program. This is kind of time-consuming task, not any 5-minutes „fill the gaps” exercise. To be honest, when I want to write particularly well, it takes about an hour for me to compose such a paper in German. On the other hand, this work pays off one day – I will get my writing checked, revised and corrected by teacher and can be sure, that if I need a document like this one day in real life, I can use my own work done. In this way, during my previous German courses, I have already written my curriculum vitae, motivation letter to apply for the job, petition (for a company for instance), standard letter etc in German. Now I have them all ready and corrected in my drawer to use for the future :o)

strassen|feger – was ist das eigentlich?

Hallo!

http://www.strassenfeger.org/strassenfeger/zeitung.html

Tuuli
