German to go!

apps

It can be hard to get into the habit of practising your new language outside of lessons. Sometimes life just gets in the way.

But just finding 20 minutes in your day to practise new words and grammar can really help you remember what you learn at DeutschAkademie. Making index cards is one of the most effective ways to do this, but a fun alternative is to use the all-powerful smartphone in your pocket.

Free apps like babel (above left) and Duolingo (above right) are ideal for the U-bahn or when you’re waiting for the bus. They feature quick, fun exercises to help you learn words and, importantly, their articles. The best apps use picture games, which allow your brain to associate words with familiar objects.

It’s also important to learn to pronounce words properly, and both babel and Duolingo feature audio pronunciations which help with this. It’s always a good idea to say the words out loud as you learn them, though this may not be possible on public transport!

So each time you have a spare ten minutes in your day, why not load up your German app and get in some all-important practice? You’ll know a Schlüssel  from a Schüssel in no time.

Both babel and Duolingo can be downloaded from the iOS and Android app stores.
