Homework – fun and suffering hand in hand

Hey,

I must say I’m glad it’s Thursday today. Even though we got homework after a lesson today, I am not forced to do it *exactly* tonight. I can take my time and divide the exercises for weekend-days. There is homework given in DeutschAkademie every day and the tasks must be finished (and you should be ready to review your answers with other in classroom) the next day. Exercises usually include grammar tasks or composing a piece of writing. On one hand, even though I enjoy learning German very much, I have to say that my “spirit” is getting a bit tired since I stepped on “DeutshAkademie wheel” at the beginning of September. While trying to match and divide the time between my main job and studies, I feel supertired in the evenings when I open my book and start to rehearse, what we learned today, on my own once again. On the other hand, this is an important part of learning process indeed, because refreshing and working on your own once again (even if it’s just a short time!) is essential besides the time you spend being present at school.
Trust me, I’m a part-time Au-pair, hehe.

Our teacher asked to write her little feedback postcards yesterday. She was interested in our opinions about the lessons so far: what has been good/bad, how do we feel about our own development and what do we wish ourselves for the future classes. Since I write with a pleasure, it was easy to give such a feedback. I like writing in general and I know I can write in German better than to speak in German. Odd, isn’t it? :~) However, Deutschakademie lessons have definitely helped to improve my speaking skills (speaking speed, vocabulary, grammar etc).
Just to sum up this section, I can share a link for English-German dictionary in Internet, that I use: dict.leo.org . There might be too much advertisements around, but I still like it, because the system translates into German with articles and plural forms, yay! If someone happens to know a good German synonym dictionary, you can let me know in comments!

Nice weekend for all the students!

Halli-hallo!

Achten Thema in unserem Buch heißt Ernährung.

Revolverheld
Wise Guys
Bosse
Tim Bendzko
Johannes Oerding
Sportfreunde Stiller
Seeed
Balbina
Philipp Poisel
Xavier Naidoo
Johannes Falk
Eva Croissant
Laing

Made in Germany playlist (verschiedene Künstler)

Time flies – first week is over!

Hello again,

The first four lessons in our language class, as well as the first chapter in workbook, are over by now. We improved our vocabulary in relationships topic and also worked on grammar skills. We reminded comparative, generalized relative clauses, nouns with prepositions and learned to use indirect (reported) speech. The last one definitely needs more practice to use it correctly unconsciously. I like, that we are almost equally reading, listening and speaking in classroom, so the learning process doesn’t get tiresome. Writing exercises are usually homework and there is enough time in following lesson to ask questions, if something left unclear.

Mona giving us homework for weekend 🙂

The funny thing is, that humor is always present in our class. Since the last topic was quite personal issue and we all, in different ages, come from very different cultural societies; then the opinions and stories could have lasted forever. But there is happily no criticism, rather open sharing.

I also heard, that there are regular so-to-speak Stammtische for Deutschakademie students and movie night happening next week. Unfortunately they are both taking place not on a suitable evening or time for me, but I hope to get there somewhen in future. Stammtisch takes place every Wednesday evening in Mommseneck at Potsdamer Platz.

On coming weekend, I am planning to go to Plattenfest. The aim at the beginning was to see and listen to Revolverheld (one of my favorite German bands so far), but it is rather turning to meeting some new Berliners (and thereby also listening to music :). Thanks to this, I also have an entertaining topic for next blogpost. At least I myself am excited, plus I try to write it in German.

Auf Wiedersehen!

I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike*

Ever since, when I arrived to Berlin, I knew I was going to ride a bike here. Seeing in how good condition are the bike roads here comparing to the ones in my home country and noticing all those people cruising on their fancy bikes made want to own one as well. Even though the public transport system runs smooth in capital city, I got my neon green bicycle in spring and started to discover Berlin on wheels. But before this, I found a very useful website in Internet: let me present www.bikesurf.org . This is a free bike-rental project, that works in 9 cities around the world and Berlin is happily one of them. You can borrow a bike maximum for a week and pay what you can (or nothing, if you can not afford it). This is a good way to try out cycling or some exact kind of bike for a short period. You need to book in advance online and since the systems works on voluntary basis, the best ones might be gone fast!

IMG_20140802_135528

But whenever you are in traffic, there are several rules you should follow. In Germany in general, cyclist should ride on the right side of the road and obey all traffic laws as if he was driving a car. If there is a cycle path, you must use it and not ride on the street with traffic. You must give a hand signal for all turns and make sure your bike has a bell, brakes and lights in front and rear (police might check them and to be honest, you really need them!). Unfortunately, many bikes are stolen in Berlin every day, therefore a strong bike lock is strongly recommended.

In my experience is the cycling pretty enjoyable in Berlin, but there are also people with years of experience, who ride arrogantly and do not care about all the rules. Riding a bike might help you out in a big city if there are errors in the work of public transport (sometimes you can get from A to B even faster than a car or train). As an advantage you save environment and burn calories every time J. I am definitely going to ride my bike on regular basis as long as the streets are not icy here.

Hello DeutschAkademie!

Intro
Hello all,
My name is Tuuli. I am 25 years old, come from Estonia and started my B2.2 German language course in Deutschakademie today. I speak Estonian, English and I’m learning German, so my further posts will be in one of these languages.

Lesson

There are 9 people in my class, which is (few) enough. I am used to learn in much bigger groups; but as we all know – the less, the better. Our teacher is bright-eyed young lady and the students come from all over the world – from New Zealand til Columbia.

As the group members didn’t mostly know each other, we played so-called speed-dating for start. There were couple of questions/topics given, that we had to discuss about during a limited time. Afterwards we spoke once again in an open round what we just got to know about each other. The truth is, it was difficult to remember all the details and people tended to talk about other themes than given. But as long as it was all in German, it was okay 🙂

After a little break, we started with our first topic, which is relationships. Through a brainstorming we created a joint mandala on whiteboard about the words that popped into our minds on this topic. Afterwards, we discussed about a mixed family picture in our book and passed a listening task about it. Once again, students were paired up and asked to talk about their own families.

First impressions

Those first three hours in DeutschAkademie passed like one wink. Since I didn’t (had a chance to) take any German classes in July and August at all, I was a bit afraid, that “waking up” my German sense will be pretty slow.  No way! Headfirst back to German and it’s coming rather fast. The atmosphere  was pleasant and free plus I didn’t feel like learning is a must. New day, new lesson tomorrow! It might get even better, since we will receive…. tadaaa, our books! 😉

See you,

Tuuli
