My advice of the day – Cards!

Berlin, am 05. juillet 2014

People tend to tag you with language skills when you say you love to learn languages. It’s an honor, really. Yet, it is all about hard work (for me, at least), and this hard work includes cards, cards, cards.

When I was a little kid, my mother used to tell me that I can’t sit for a long time and concentrate and I have to write everything down in order to remember. She was right. I have to write every word I hear, many times, and say it many times, in order to remember it. Through the years I developed my own methods to remember more and more things, but the most useful method is still cards. I write different things in different colors and memorize it when I’m on the bus, or a train, ignoring the other people around me.

I have cards with vocabulary, cards with grammar rules, cards with prepositions and cards with verbs. You should try it too – it is most useful 🙂

Musical Box Festival in Breitscheidplatz – my recommendation for the weekend!!

Berlin, am 04. juillet 2014

When I was a child, I was always fascinated by musical boxes. How the sound comes out of the box and reminds me of fairies and butterflies, when the man stands next to his box and sings about faraway places that I always dreamed about. It was magic to me.

And this weekend this magic turns to reality in a festival next to Breitscheidplatz (next to the Zoo S-Bahn station). Old and young people playing the music boxes for hours and hours, live shows on stage for three days… like a dream come true… One of them even offered me to play his musical box! Don’t miss the festival this weekend 🙂

Last day of the course :)

Berlin, am 03. juillet 2014

Our teacher, Carolin, decided that the last day of the course should be celebrated with breakfast. The chosen place was An einem Sonntag im August (yes, that’s a name of a café bar In Prenzlauer Berg!). We got there at 9am and spent there three lovely hours of talking about cultures, traveling and knowing each other (and “all you can eat Buffet” in 4.90 EURO) – things that we did not have the chance to do during the course itself.

We got to the finish line with great people: Marta (Spain), Na Young (South Korea), Omar (Venezuela), Romarik (France), Isaac (South Korea) and I.

The woman on the right (in the picture) is our great teacher, Carolin, and I think I speak for all of us when I say you are incredible and so patient. VIELEN DANK for everything!!

An einem Sonntag im August: Address: Kastanienallee 103, 10435 Berlin

Dativ? Akkusativ? Oy!!

Tal_S
Berlin, am 02. juillet 2014

I love to learn new languages, I really do. Besides Hebrew, my mother tongue, I speak English and some Arabic and Dutch. I came to Germany knowing that I’m going to conquer Deutsch – no matter what! Yet, the grammar issue is always my weakness. I know, I have my ways of working this grammar out and make it, but it’s the most annoying part of the language. I prefer to study vocabulary much more! It’s far more interesting 🙂 This past week we studied Dativ cases after the Akkusativ, and I wasn’t sure, after all the exercises in class and at home that I know how to recognize a case successfully.

So today was the last day of the course, and we were working on the Dativ and Akkusativ, and the part that I’m actually having trouble with. We read a few sections and examined them word by word. Now I feel better, I think. Nonetheless, as you can see in the pictures below, I decided to make tables of the common prepositions for Dativ and Akkusativ, so it would be easier for me in the future. I thought it might be helpful for you too, so at your service 🙂

A day off? Take a tour!!

Tal_S
Berlin, am 01. juillet 2014

Berlin is full of guided trips. Everywhere you go, you see someone holds an umbrella and talks to a tiny microphone and a group of people following the umbrella. I took two awesome guided trips that I wanted to tell you about. Both are “Sandemans new Berlin”’ tours (you can find their brochure in every Starbucks- cost: 12 Euro, for students 10 Euro). The first tour was “Red Berlin.” For more than three hours we walked across Berlin and heard stories about the Stasi and the Berlin wall, how people managed to escape through different ways, how they lived back then… We went through the monuments, archive, East Side Gallery – it was an amazing and interesting tour!!

The second tour was the Alternative City tour. I wasn’t sure whether to take it, because I am not an art fan, but decided that Berlin has so much alternative art to show me, and the price is only 12 Euro… I had to see it for my own eyes. We met at Brandenburg Gate and walked around mostly in Mitte and Kreuzberg. I don’t want to ruin the surprise- it’s a really great tour, not only for art/ street art/ graffiti lovers, but for everybody 🙂

Both instructors were young students, knowledgeable, funny and fun!! Highly recommended!!
