I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike*

Ever since, when I arrived to Berlin, I knew I was going to ride a bike here. Seeing in how good condition are the bike roads here comparing to the ones in my home country and noticing all those people cruising on their fancy bikes made want to own one as well. Even though the public transport system runs smooth in capital city, I got my neon green bicycle in spring and started to discover Berlin on wheels. But before this, I found a very useful website in Internet: let me present www.bikesurf.org . This is a free bike-rental project, that works in 9 cities around the world and Berlin is happily one of them. You can borrow a bike maximum for a week and pay what you can (or nothing, if you can not afford it). This is a good way to try out cycling or some exact kind of bike for a short period. You need to book in advance online and since the systems works on voluntary basis, the best ones might be gone fast!

But whenever you are in traffic, there are several rules you should follow. In Germany in general, cyclist should ride on the right side of the road and obey all traffic laws as if he was driving a car. If there is a cycle path, you must use it and not ride on the street with traffic. You must give a hand signal for all turns and make sure your bike has a bell, brakes and lights in front and rear (police might check them and to be honest, you really need them!). Unfortunately, many bikes are stolen in Berlin every day, therefore a strong bike lock is strongly recommended.

In my experience is the cycling pretty enjoyable in Berlin, but there are also people with years of experience, who ride arrogantly and do not care about all the rules. Riding a bike might help you out in a big city if there are errors in the work of public transport (sometimes you can get from A to B even faster than a car or train). As an advantage you save environment and burn calories every time J. I am definitely going to ride my bike on regular basis as long as the streets are not icy here.
